Better to work from home?
The
Jury is still out, and deliberations are at their peak! Should we or should we not
work from home? Debates have sprung all around dinner parties, formal gatherings,
business functions, church events, and even from the comforts of our living
rooms! People are talking and some are listening to the chatter and consequently contemplating the allure of an at home virtual
office.
OK, so let us
explore the benefits or pros of this neoteric existence. For starters, who would
not want to roll out of bed after hitting snooze on the alarm clock five times,
skip the arduous hair and make-up routine, and avoid traffic (stop and go,
bumper to bumper and horn honking interactions)?
Pros of working from home
Saves money:
·
No heavy commute= no digging deep to pay for gas
·
omitting the morning Starbucks coffee runs=
saving of up to at least $100 a month
·
opting to skip the formal business attire= less trips to the drycleaners
Saves Time:
·
More time for food prep. We can put dinner in
the oven during our lunch hour
·
More sleep-in time in the mornings. We may even
have time to prepare a decent breakfast!
·
Without the commute more quality time with the
kids after work
*** No more dealing with unfair office politics, instead being
evaluated based on our merit not by who likes us!**

Sounds too good to be true, right?
For a multitude of us a cyber home
space has become a new reality. Greeting co-workers in our pajamas from
the small screen in the AM is as second nature as pressing the power button on our
tv remotes.
To note a couple of attributing factors
that have brought about this shift to the virtual office: the mortifying
Corona pandemic that sweep nations in 2020, and of the surge of
technology that allows us to communicate from the four corners of the world. Now
what are the disadvantages to this modernistic work approach?
Cons of working from home
·
Feelings of absolute isolation,
which could lead to depression
·
Overeating-weight gain
·
Muscle atrophy
·
A mundane and predictable workday
·
Frequent interruptions from spouse, children and
pets who do understand the confines of working from home
·
Various
distractions: Temptation to do housework, outside noises, doorbell ringing for deliveries etc.
That sums it
up, the pros and the cons. Now the verdict is for us to decide. Leap into the virtual
world from 9am-5pm or continue to interact with humanoids in real life?
